UROP Leader Spotlight: Gabriela Herrerias

This week, we are spotlighting Gabriela (Gaby) Herrerias, an incoming UROP Leader! Gaby was born and raised in Miami, FL and first became interested in research after takin a hands-on STEM course while in high school. With growing curiosity about research, Gaby became a UROP student for the 2019-2020 academic year. As a UROP student, she was “mentored by Katherine Musacchio Schafer in researching meta-analysis on the risk and preventive factors of veteran suicide.” Gaby is currently conducting researching with Dr. Julia Sheffler, “looking at BMI as a moderator of adverse childhood experiences and health problems in older adults.” Be sure to visit Gaby at FURC as she will be presenting with her partner!

When asked why she wanted to become a UROP Leader, Gaby expressed her enjoyment for the program as a student. In writing about how she hopes to affect her students as a UROP Leader, Gaby shares, “I hope to share my passion of research with all my students and encourage them to make the most out of such an amazing program that we have the honor of being a part of. I look forward to inspiring my students to explore the world around them and constantly remain curious about it. I want to make this an enjoyable experience for all my students, and I hope that at the end of the program, my students feel confident and excited about research just as I did at the end of my time as a UROP student. Having gone through the program and experiencing it all myself, I hope that through my efforts, I can create the ultimate environment to cultivate my student’s minds to help them be able to fully immerse themselves into the program.”

Outside of UROP, Gaby is a member of the Hispanic Honor Society and Omicron Delta Kappa, a national leadership honor society. She also works at Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare as a Patient Care Assistant. After graduation Gaby plans to take a gap year and continue working at TMH before applying to medical school. A fun fact about Gaby is that she will be going on her fourth mission trip to work on water sanitation in the Dominican Republic.

We are so glad to have Gaby as a UROP Leader! We can’t wait to see the impact she has on her students!
