Thalia Mendoza: Some things that have Surprised Me

I always tell people that I live life as if it is never ending. I am always in a rush, always one step ahead of the game, I am never not doing something. For me it was always like that. Even in high school, I was always ahead in my classes. I used to take college classes since sophomore year of high school, during the summer I would also take college classes, and then when I graduated from high school, I only had a 3-week vacation before I started attending Florida State University; and ever since, I have not stopped. For this reason, I always found it difficult to relax and not do anything or to live a slower paced lifestyle. Often times, I felt that when I was slowing down, my anxiety would kick in.

With that being said, it has been interesting to see how I have managed my virtual internship, which might not be as fast paced as I imagined. I’m surprised at myself because half of me is enjoying the flexibility I have and the free time I have, but the other half of me wishes it was a bit more fast paced or that it was in person so I would at least be a bit more active. I am sure that the feelings I am experiencing are normal, especially in today’s COVID world, where half the population is working from home, while the other half is working in person.

For the first time in my life, I am actually somewhat enjoying having more free time and living a slower paced lifestyle. As a result, I have had the opportunity to focus more on myself and practice self-care, something I do not usually practice. Life can be overwhelming at times, and it can take a toll on your life and your mental health. Throughout these past couple of months, I have prioritized my mental health more than ever. If I do not take care of myself, then I cannot succeed to the best of my abilities. My goal is to succeed, so then I can give back to the very same people who helped me succeed in life.
